Learn how Dynamic Number Insertion (DNI), GCLIDs, and session stitching work. The definitive technical guide for performance marketers.

Understanding the "Source of Truth" in a multi-touch world.

As an agency, your value is defined by your ability to prove ROI. But phone calls have historically been a "black box" - a gap in the data where attribution goes to die.

This guide explains the technical mechanics of how modern call tracking bridges that gap, turning phone calls into data as rich and trackable as a web form fill.

1. The Concept: Dynamic Number Insertion

The core technology behind call tracking is Dynamic Number Insertion (DNI) - a system that transforms static phone numbers into intelligent attribution anchors.

How DNI Works

Step 1: The Visit
A user lands on your client's website through any marketing channel.

Step 2: The Script
The Enfonica JavaScript snippet loads asynchronously. It captures the landing URL, referrer and available campaign parameters and click IDs so Call Tracking can answer: Did they come from Google Ads? Facebook? Organic search? Direct?

Step 3: The Swap
The script locates numbers that match your pool rules (e.g., 02 9000 1234) and replaces them with a tracking number from your dedicated pool (e.g., 02 9000 5678). When a free number is available, it is unique to that active visitor.

Step 4: The Link
The number stays assigned while the visitor is active and becomes available again shortly after they leave. That assignment is the link between a web visit and a phone call.

The Result

If the user dials 02 9000 5678 while only their session holds the number, the call has High confidence attribution. You can show the client the visit behind the lead, with the source and campaign details captured on that session.

2. The Golden Key: The Google Click ID

For Google Ads campaigns, we go beyond basic "Source/Medium" tracking. We capture the GCLID - Google's identifier for the ad click.

What is the GCLID?

With auto-tagging enabled, eligible Google Ads landing URLs carry a GCLID. Some visits use GBRAID or WBRAID instead. Think of the click ID as a reference Google can match back to its own click record, rather than a code you decode to read the keyword or campaign.

Why the GCLID Changes Everything

With the Google Ads integration connected, qualifying calls are uploaded with the captured click ID. Google matches that ID to the original ad click, so the phone lead can appear as a conversion in Google Ads.

Translation: Your phone leads appear alongside form fills. You can make the case for your campaigns with conversion data, rather than asking clients to take your word for it.

The click ID identifies the ad click; the call-to-session match still depends on the number assignment and attribution confidence. A call without a captured click ID is not uploaded to Google Ads.

3. Session Stitching & GA4 Integration

Phone leads belong in the same conversation as your website conversions. Session stitching helps bring those two parts of the journey together.

What is Session Stitching?

Session Stitching links a phone call to the visitor's Google Analytics 4 (GA4) session, so you can report on web activity and phone leads together.

How It Works

Step 1: Cookie Reading
When Analytics cookies are available, Enfonica reads the browser's client_id from _ga and its session_id from _ga_*.

Step 2: Event Transmission
With GA4 connected, each qualifying call sends a phone_call event with the available IDs. The default minimum connected duration is 60 seconds; set it to 0 to include all calls, including missed calls.

Step 3: Timeline Stitching
Those IDs let GA4 associate the call with the visitor's user and session. Without the Analytics client ID, a synthetic ID is used and the call appears as a separate user.

The Insight

Imagine a prospect finds your client, browses the service pages and then picks up the phone. With the website's Analytics tracking and session IDs in place, that phone lead can sit alongside their web events in GA4.

The phone call no longer has to be the missing piece of your ROI report. See GA4 setup and reporting for the details.

4. Confidence & Pool Sizing

A common question from agencies: "What if two people see the same tracking number at the same time?"

This is precisely why pool sizing and attribution confidence are critical components of call tracking.

Understanding Number Pools

The Pool
A dedicated group of tracking numbers assigned to a website or campaign.

The Math
If you have 10 free numbers, you can assign a separate number to each of 10 concurrent visitors.

The Overflow
If an 11th visitor arrives while all 10 numbers are still assigned, the system must reuse a number - which reduces attribution certainty.

The Confidence System

Call Tracking gives you the evidence behind each match:

🟢 High Confidence
Exactly one session held the number when the call started.

🟡 Medium Confidence
Several sessions held the number, and one was geographically near the caller.

🔴 Low Confidence
Several candidates existed and location could not uniquely identify one. The closest or most recent session was chosen.

No Attribution
No web session could be linked to the call.

Repeat calls from the same caller to the same number within seven days can inherit an earlier call's attribution. Open a call in Tracked calls for its reason flags, matched session and, for Medium or Low confidence, alternative sessions.

Best Practice: Pool Sizing Formula

Size pools for simultaneous visitors, rather than a fixed number of monthly visits:

numbers = ceil(busiest-hour visits × average time on page in minutes ÷ 60 × 1.5)

Start with the plan's included numbers and check pool health after launch. See pool sizing, confidence and attribution limits.

The Attribution Truth

Call tracking isn't magic. It's precise session management combined with intelligent data capture.

The Three-Step Formula

1. Swap - Replace the site's number with a tracking number using your pool rules.

2. Capture - Collect the available campaign parameters, click IDs and GA4 identifiers with the session.

3. Push - Send qualifying calls to your connected advertising and analytics platforms.

This is how agencies prove value.
This is how you turn phone calls from a black box into your most valuable conversion data.
