Short answer
Enough that visitors on the website at the same time don't have to share a number, which depends on how many people are on the site at once, not on monthly traffic. Start with the numbers your plan includes, and check the pool's health after a week.

Why does the number of numbers matter?
Each visitor is shown their own tracking number from the pool, so that when they call, Call Tracking knows which visit the call came from. When every number is already held by someone, the next visitor has to share a number with another visitor. A call to a shared number can't be linked to one visit for certain, so its attribution confidence is lower.
What counts is how many visitors are on the website at the same moment. A visitor holds a number while they're active and for about 2 minutes after, so a site with steady traffic through the day needs far fewer numbers than its monthly visits suggest.
Where should you start?
Start with the numbers your plan includes. Each plan includes enough for the traffic it's designed for: 2 numbers on Starter, 5 on Growth and 10 on Pro. For a site with more traffic than that, or to work it out for yourself, see Size a number pool.
How do you know if a pool is big enough?
After a week of real traffic, go to the tracking site's Number pools. Each pool's card shows its Health over the last 7 days:
| Health | Visitors who had to share a number | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Healthy | 5% or fewer | Nothing |
| At risk | more than 5%, up to 15% | Consider adding numbers |
| Critical | more than 15% | Add numbers |
To add numbers, see Add numbers to a pool.
Can you need fewer numbers?
Yes. A pool only hands out numbers on the pages and to the visitors its rules cover. You can:
- limit the rule to the pages people call from, such as contact and service pages, with Allowed Path Prefixes;
- swap the number only for visitors from ads, with Apply only to paid traffic, if you don't need to track calls from other visitors.
Visitors the rule doesn't cover see the website's normal number. To learn how, see Create a number pool and its rules.
